Getting Job Texts from Unknown Numbers? It's Likely a Scam.

Scammers are sending out text messages about amazing job opportunities. These texts may sound like they're from recruiters or legitimate companies, but their real aim is to steal your identity, personal information, or money.

According to the FTC in the first half of 2025, more than 235,000 text message scams were reported in the U.S., resulting in $342 million in losses. And, about 12% of these were job or employment text scams.

How This Scam Works

  • You receive a text message out of the blue offering a high-paying job or gig, often starting with something like “Are you interested?”

  • The message pressures you to reply, fill out personal or financial info, or pay for “training,” “equipment,” or “screening fees.”

  • Sometimes, the scammer pretends to be a recruiter from a well-known company, to gain your trust.

  • Once you respond, they push you to share sensitive personal data (Social Security number, bank account, ID) or send money.

  • In some cases, you’re asked to pay for materials or software up front and promised reimbursement later.

Tips to Stay Safe from Job Text Scams

  • Real companies don’t usually recruit through random texts.
  • Search for jobs with reputable search websites or company career pages. These are safer ways to find real job opportunities.
  • Research the company and reach out through their official website or phone number to confirm if there is a job opening.
  • Real employers won’t ask you to cover “fees” or costs upfront.
  • Be careful about sharing sensitive info like Social Security numbers or bank details online.
