How OceanAir Federal Credit Union is using Carefull to protect members, engage families, and strengthen trust

Fraud has changed. It no longer looks only like a stolen credit card, suspicious login, or unusual transaction. Increasingly, it looks like a trusted relationship: a scammer posing as a grandchild, a fake investment advisor, a romantic interest, a government agency, or a tech support representative.

For credit unions, that creates a difficult new reality. Many of today’s most damaging scams happen outside traditional fraud systems. By the time money moves, the manipulation may have been unfolding for weeks or months.

That is why OceanAir Federal Credit Union, a nearly $1 billion institution serving more than 27,000 members in Oxnard, California, turned to Carefull.

In a recent CU Broadcast interview, OceanAir’s Jesus Garcia shared why the credit union brought Carefull to its members, what implementation looked like, and why the platform has become an important new layer of protection inside their digital banking experience.

“We’re really, really proud of the partnership,” Garcia said.

“Carefull was really easy to integrate, it only took a few weeks.” For OceanAir, that ease mattered. Like many credit unions, the team needed a solution that could make an immediate impact without creating a heavy lift for internal teams, or turning into a long IT project.

“We’ve never had a solution that we launched within online banking that actually had this much usage right away.” That kind of adoption is significant for any credit union evaluating a new fintech partnership. Carefull was not simply another tool added to our digital experience. OceanAir’s members used it. And they used it because the need is real.

Scams are no longer limited to obvious red flags or suspicious transactions. Romance scams, impersonation scams, payment scams, and AI-powered social engineering are increasingly designed to exploit trust, loneliness, urgency, and family dynamics.

Todd Wascom of Carefull described the challenge this way: “These scams are committed through the member, which is why they’re so hard to catch.” That is exactly where Carefull brings a different approach. Rather than only reacting after money leaves an account, Carefull is built to spot behavioral patterns that deserve attention earlier. It uses empathetic human language to invite awareness and conversation, not shame or alarm.

Carefull also extends protection beyond the credit union and into the member’s trusted circle. Members can add trusted contacts, including family members, who can receive alerts and help spot concerns earlier. Garcia noted this as one of the most powerful parts of the platform. “The coolest thing about Carefull is, once someone goes in, they do their profile, they set it up, they invite their family members to keep an eye on their loved ones,” he said. “We’ve never had anything like that before.”

For credit unions, that family connection is more than a feature. It is a strategic opportunity. “This allows us not only the opportunity to protect the member, but to engage the family,” he said. “It also creates opportunities for them to also know about the credit union and how we’re protecting their loved ones, but all the things that we do for our members.”

That is the larger opportunity for credit unions. Carefull is not just a fraud prevention tool. It is a relationship-building platform. It gives credit unions a way to show up for members and families at the exact moment when trust, protection, and guidance matter most.

And while Carefull is purpose-built to help protect older adults and their families, OceanAir quickly saw that the value extended beyond one demographic. Garcia himself was the first user at OceanAir. “I was actually the first user,” he said. “I was the first one. I said, ‘I gotta do this. Yes, this will protect our most vulnerable members,” Garcia said, “but it doesn’t stop there. It’s protected me. It is protecting my daughter. It’s protecting all of our families.”

That combination — fast launch, strong usage, family engagement, and meaningful protection — is exactly why Carefull stands out in a crowded fintech landscape.

Credit union leaders are under pressure to modernize fraud prevention while still preserving the member-first experience that defines the movement. Carefull helps them do both.

It gives credit unions a way to detect risk earlier, educate members in context, involve trusted family members, and create a more proactive layer of financial safety.

As Barb Loman of CSS noted during the interview, fraud is now part of nearly every conversation she has with credit unions. “There are no conversations that I have with credit unions these days where fraud doesn’t come up as a topic in some way, shape, or form,” she said. But credit unions do not have to solve this alone.

OceanAir’s biggest lesson for other credit unions was simple: make Carefull visible. “Don’t bury this anywhere,” Garcia said. “Put it right in front of your online banking. Build your widget. This is a great tool. It’s worth the real estate in your online banking platform.”

For credit unions looking to protect members from modern scams, deepen family relationships, and deliver visible value inside digital banking, OceanAir’s message is clear:  Carefull works. Members use it. Families benefit from it. And it helps credit unions show, in a very real way, that they are looking out for the people behind the accounts.
